Tech jobs that don’t need code
When people hear I’ve worked in tech for about 15 years, they often assume I’m an engineer. I’m not. I’ve spent my career in operations, and I’ve watched a lot of smart, capable people rule themselves out of tech because they think it’s all code.
It isn’t. Behind every app you use, there are whole teams of people making sure it actually works for real humans. A few of them:
The roles
- Operations: making sure the product and the business run smoothly every day, and fixing the process when they don’t.
- Customer experience: support, quality, escalations, and turning what customers say into changes that stick.
- Trust & safety: keeping users and the platform safe, from fraud to policy to the genuinely weird edge cases.
- Program management: getting big, messy projects across the finish line with a lot of people pulling in different directions.
What already carries over
If you’re a mom thinking about a move into tech, you’re probably underselling yourself. Prioritizing under pressure, keeping a hundred moving parts in your head, staying calm when something breaks, and communicating with stakeholders who are upset (small ones count): that’s the job.
Where to start
- Search job titles like support operations, operations specialist, trust & safety analyst, and program coordinator.
- Read the descriptions and highlight every skill you already use at home or work. It’ll be more than you think.
- Talk to someone already doing the role. Most people are happy to share how they got in.
